There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.
Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.
For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.
Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.
Callie Lawrence has a very bad past. It made her quiet and anti social. No one knows why she acted as a freak, as her friends called her. Yet she didn’t care what people say, the only thing she care is leaving Laramie, her home town as soon as she can. Kayden Owens is a popular boy. Hehas the most desirable girlfriend, a quarterback with bright future and a son from respectable family. Yet he has a secret. Secret that only his family know but no one care. Not even his mother. The only thing he looks forward is the day he leaves Laramie. One night they met coincidentally. And it changes their life.
Through Callie and Kayden POV we know their secrets. Sometime the way they talk is so rough yet it feels honest to me.
Stitches aren’tgoing to help. They fix skin, cuts, wounds, heal stuff on the outside.Everything broken with me is on the inside. “I can handle scars, especially one’s on the outside.”
And sometime I can’t believe the decision they made, make me want to scream at their face and say why you didn’t do it or why you did it? Yet I can feel and connected to their pain.
I blink the thought away as I sit down on the floor and lift up my shirt. I vowed when I went to college that I’d give it up—stop the fucking habit. But I guess it owns me more than I thought.
I’ve read many good emotional-heart breaking-dark YA/New Adult books. This is one of kind of books. It reminds me of Charade by Nyrae Dawn and The Sea of Tranquility by Kayja Millay. At some parts the story quite predictable for me. On the other hand, I enjoyed reading it, the story goes smoothly through Callie and Kayden’s perspective.
Usually I prefer a tough/badass heroine. Callie is a fragile girl. She hides behind her eyeliner, her oversized jacket and even her hair elastic. But I love her because she wants to change. She allows herself has a new life with Seth’s help, her best friend. Their new life begins with simple things, the lists. I really love their list. It’s just an ordinary thing to do but meaningful. Here are my favorites:
#27 Offer to Help Someone Without Them Asking.
#17 Let Something Amazing Happen, Without Question or Hesitation
#43 Face Your Fears Head On and Tell Them to Fuck Off
#3 Do Whatever the Hell You Want for Once Instead of What You Think You Should Do
#9 Dance in the Rain
#13 Live in the Moment
#17 Be Yourself
When I read reviews, most of readers kind of curse the ending. So I prepare myself for the cliffhanger but to me it didn’t as a cliffhanger as I thought. I’ve read this kind of cliffhanger in the end of Barely Breathing by Rebecca Donovan so it didn’t surprise me at all. And somehow I think I can guess what will happen to Kayden. But it still interested me and I want to read the sequel.
They say first impression is an important thing to know someone. I think it’s true with this book. The coincidence of Callie &Kayden was my first book from Jessica Sorensen, and it left a good impression to me. I want to know more about her in the future so I definitely will read her other books.
“It’s amazing how the things you remember forever are the things you’d rather forget and the things you desperately want to grasp onto seem to slip away like sand in the wind.”
“Life is full of luck, like getting dealt a good hand, or simply by being in the right place at the right time. Some people get luck handed to them, a second chance, a save. It can happen heroically, or by a simple coincidence , but there are those who don’t get luck on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.”
